Zamzar should be given respect before it gets criticized. It has been handling file conversions since 2006, making it one of the oldest internet tools still carrying out the task it was originally designed for. The list of formats is extensive and goes deep into specialist territory, the FAQ is written by humans, and for two decades "just Zamzar it" has been genuinely useful advice. Longevity like that is rare, and the rarity is earned.
However, the free tier has aged into the most stringent of any major converter, and that is not our assessment. It's stated in their FAQ.
The free tier, per Zamzar's own pages
- 50 MB max file size. The FAQ states it directly: free uploads cap at 50 MB. By 2026 standards that is quite tight: a phone video exceeds it after about a minute of footage, and a multi-page scan can use up the whole allowance by itself.
- Two conversions per 24 hours. Also from the FAQ: two conversions and two compressions per day. File three waits for tomorrow or a credit card.
- 24-hour retention. Converted files on free accounts are stored on their servers for 24 hours, then removed.
Lifting the caps means Basic at $12 a month for 200 MB files, Pro at $19 for 400 MB, or Business at $39 for 2 GB. Calculated annually, the top standard tier runs $468 a year, and its 2 GB ceiling is worth keeping in mind for later.
Where reviewers hit the wall
Zamzar's Trustpilot profile sits at a solid 4.2, which means the majority of customers leave satisfied. The negative reviews, though, keep returning to one particular experience: discovering the wall once the work has been completed.
One reviewer found that an 18 MB converted file was too large to download for free. Another uploaded an MP4, waited through the entire conversion, and was then asked to pay to access the file. A third says the site promised a free conversion, then required an account to download the result. Others simply describe the pace: conversions taking about an hour or longer.
Every service gets negative reviews. What makes these worth citing is that they aren't about bugs. They illustrate the free-tier design functioning as intended: the limit reveals itself at the point of maximum sunk cost, after the file has been uploaded and the wait has been endured.

The size gap is the headline: FormatFusion's free tier accepts files twenty times larger than Zamzar's, and even Zamzar's $39-a-month Business tier limits files to 2 GB, only twice the size of our free cap. The real distinction is architectural. Zamzar converts on its servers, meaning each file costs them money, which is why the limits and queues exist. FormatFusion converts in your browser using WebAssembly engines, so your files cost us nothing and never leave your machine. There is no upload to wait for, no queue to buy priority in, and no moment when a completed file turns into a payment screen.
As for FormatFusion Pro, for completeness: $29 once, which removes the ads and the 1 GB cap and adds unlimited batches with ZIP download and output controls. A single month of Zamzar Business costs more.
Honest routing
There are genuine reasons to stay with Zamzar: its wide range of legacy and specialist formats, an email-link delivery that suits your workflow, or the simple circumstance that two small conversions a day is all you actually do and the company's twenty years of service matter to you. Those are real reasons.
Switch if your files outgrew 50 MB, your patience outgrew the queue, or your sense of fairness is offended by paywalls that appear after the conversion.
